Frequently asked questions
How do I start a habit?
Add a habit with a name, an optional description, and how often you want to do it — daily, specific days of the week, or a number of times per day. Every habit is 66 credited repetitions, with a maximum of one credited repetition per day, no matter the frequency.
Where does the number 66 come from?
You've probably heard it takes 21 days to form a habit. That number came from a 1960s book, not from research. It's a myth.
The real number is closer to 66 days — that's the average across the biggest studies. Some habits form faster, some take longer.
A habit sticks when it stops being a decision — when it's just part of who you are and what you do. Getting there takes longer than three weeks.
Missing a day doesn't ruin anything. You lose a day, not your progress.
Writing a line about what you did helps it stick, so this app asks for proof early on. Once the habit is nearly formed, writing becomes optional — the app asks less of you as the habit needs less of you.
If you're tired of quitting habits even after 21 days, give this one a try.
What counts as proof?
A line of text is enough — what did you do? You can also attach a photo. Proof is required for the first stretch of a habit's life and becomes optional once you're over the hump, around the 22nd repetition.
What happens if I miss a day?
Nothing is erased. A missed day costs a day, not the progress you've already made — the count keeps going, it just takes a little longer to reach 66.
Does 66 Habits cost anything?
No. The app is free, with no paywall, no subscription, and no in-app purchase.
Does it work across my devices?
Your data is stored locally on your device and, if you're signed into iCloud, synced privately across your own devices using Apple's CloudKit. There is no account and no server run by us.
Is my data private?
Yes. 66 Habits collects no personal data, uses no analytics or advertising, and does not track you. See the full Privacy Policy.
Are there widgets?
Yes — Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets keep today's habits and your progress visible without opening the app.
Can I get reminders?
Yes — turn on reminders for a habit in Settings and pick the days and time. Reminders are scheduled locally on your device; nothing is sent through a server, and they're off by default until you turn them on.
Can I delete a habit?
Yes, at any time. Deleting a habit removes it along with all of its check-ins, journal entries, and photos. Deleting a single check-in on its own isn't supported — only whole habits.
